Monday, January 28, 2008 Father-daughter duo grasps three trophies in karate tourney
The gymnasium at Goldenwest College in Huntington Beach was packed with people. It was the Surf City Karate Championship and hundreds of martial artists were competing in various categories.
Hersheeta K. Gupta, 9, a special Ambassador of Ashihara Karate International and wearing a green belt with a golden bar on it, demonstrated the self defense Karate moves with her father Sensei Sunit K.Gupta.
She demonstrated the essence of Ashihara Karate—"Sabaki" moves by which one can take down an opponent five times your size quickly.
Sensei Gupta acted as a bad guy who was trying to abduct little Hersheeta who defended herself with her bare hands pounding kicks and punches with "Khiai."
Even when she was threatened and attacked with a sword she was able to snatch it off from her attacker and stab him with the sword. After being punished for his actions and being beaten up badly, the attacker pulled out a gun and commands little Hersheeta to join him. In a spark she grabs the gun and shoots the attacker down.
Hersheeta Gupta and Sensei Dr. Sunit K. Gupta won the trophy as the first prize in self defense category.
Hersheeta also won another Trophy in Kumite (sparring).
Sensei Gupta, who is the chairman of Ashihara Karate International for North America, also won another trophy as first prize in Kata (forms).
He performed a traditional "Tensho Kata" wherein one has to infuse the power of chi in all the blood vessels to make the body like a rock.
